Back to school! 2011-2012 Fifth and Sixth Grade at Hoover Elementary - Ms. Dobyns' Classroom

The Who's WHO and the what's WHAT of 5/6 grade

Some common THINGS students will refer to this year:

"Planners" - A common Hoover academic planner will arrive at the end of August. Before these arrive, students will be given identical pages as a temporary planner packet. We will use these planners daily for assignment and event reminders. It's an effective communication tool for students, teachers as well as families.

"Inquiry Projects" - Throughout the year, students will have several opportunities to embark on joint projects as well as individual projects that embrace independent inquiry. These will often be incorporated into our science units.

"Lit Living" - If you child remarks that they wrote a poem or read a news article during "Lit Living," they are referring to our classroom's literacy choice time. During this time, students choose to work on a variety of goals and tasks while enjoying the joy of reading and writing. Choices during this time include: Spanish study, Spelling log, Independent reading and writing.

"Writer's Notebooks" These are key notebooks this year. Students will have these notebooks organized into 3 main sections:

-Front to back: Their own writing pieces, drafts, reflections, lists, thoughts. (They will self- select final drafts for their portfolios throughout the year)

-Back to front: Writing lessons, including notes on lessons like: spelling ownership, voice in writing, tone, proofreading and peer conferencing.

-Middle: Spelling logs are smack dab in the middle. Students will add to and reference this log when working through invented spellings and expanding new vocabulary.

Partners in 5/6 students' learning:

(These individuals will be people that our room of 5/6 graders will often come in contact with)

Mrs. Bradford - We welcome our new Hoover principal. She will be a wonderful advocate and leader for learning.

Mrs. Whittington - The social studies instructor for both of our homerooms. She also teaches 6th grade mathematics.

Mrs. Brownlee and Mr. Kosier - The other two 5/6 teachers in the upper unit.

Mrs. Maxwell - We welcome Mrs. Maxwell as the new Hoover secretary - already a Hoover staff member.

Mrs. Paiser - Music Education teacher

Mrs. Wade - Art Education teacher

Mrs. Bender - Guidance counselor

Ms. Ostroff - Resource teacher assisting and co-teaching several students across grade levels.

Ms. Madden - Teacher librarian and Media Specialist

Mrs. DePrenger - Physical Education teacher

Mrs. Haren - Modified classroom teacher and will be co-teaching this year in our classroom!

Ms. Jacobson - Our new instructional coach will support our classroom through differentiation, technology support and various learning areas.

Mrs. Wegman - Our 1st grade Reading Buddies group teacher.

All Hoover teachers and staff are dedicated partners in your child's education and well-being.
